A quick trip to my home town

Actually, I was in Orewa, New Zealand for two weeks, but rarely left my mother's abode.

Partly because I spent an unhealthy amount of time playing, cursing at and then repairing my ancient computer collection, but equally because Orewa is one whole giant Smooochest omninbus of the old, the used, the redundant and the just plain embrarassing. For sale.

But on the eve of my departure, I did take my camera out for just a wee glimpse of this quaint little cove of disappointment.

Photobucket
Ike's Emporium has been the home of smooch goods since forever ago. Even in the 80's it felt dated and brown and like a member of the family you'd hate a friend to encounter.

Just some of the things available for purchase at Ike's included....

Photobucket
Small vials of petroleum jelly found on a high shelf in a container you can't properly see into.

Photobucket
A basket of knobs, wooden.

Photobucket
The last container of a deodorant called "Be Yourself" even though the initials are truncated to "BU" for no readily explainable reason.

Photobucket
A plentiful amount of tiny racial soaps.

After Ike's I took a visit to the Orewa Hospice shop. Now, there are actually many fine second-hand stores in the general Hibiscus Coast region, but the worst stuff seems to end up in the Orewa establishments. The Hospice shop is staffed by many wonderful people, bright rays of sunshine on a slate-grey, chilly Coast day. However, I only wish they can find a few items of worth to stock their store with, so that people might want to buy them and then they can afford a new sign:

Photobucket
But it's not just the sign that's seen better days, take a look at some of the 'bargains'...

Photobucket
VHS tapes (mouldy).

Photobucket
Horrifying vinyl records.

Photobucket
A... a... er... whatever the hell that even is.

Photobucket
And a desk, which someone did buy, but apparently on the proviso that the store can find all of it.

And not to make myself appear to be anything other than my town's spawn, I took these photos with a camera purchased in 2002, and all the while holding a meat pie and a caramel slice (obtained from the ever-reliable Saigon Bakery).

One man's broken old junk is another man's broken old junk

Living in a kibbutz?

A setter of low expectations, so that you're never disappointed?

One of those "hardcore" wrestlers who hits themselves over the head with domestic appliances?

Then have we got a feature for you.

TradeMe (New Zealand's number one online auction website, fact fans) has a variety of listings for items that are, well.....broken. Kaput. Damaged. Not in working order.

And they're for sale!

Let's take a look:

Photobucket
WHAT IT IS: 'Broken Motorola, Half Pink Half silver' (a phone in case you hadn't guessed)

DETAIL OF AUCTION:"Here It Is If You Want It.

Check out my other great listings at great prices, items similar to this one."

(Here It Is If You Want It is the next catchy slogan from the people that brought you What You See Is What You Get)

PRICE: Someone has bid on this! You'll have to put up a whole $1.50, If You Want It.

Photobucket

(Oh boy)

WHAT IT IS: 'Broken TV for sale ***DOLLAR RESERVE BROKEN TV***'

DETAIL OF AUCTION: "As shown on the photos.

Broken Philip TV and the receiver for sale.
Comes with its 2 remote controllers and all the cables.

Once it was broken I never tried to see if it still works or not so I wouldn't know.

All the connections going into the TV receiver and TV itself are fine by the look of it.

Please don't hesitate to ask any questions!

Happy bidding :)"

PRICE: Someone has also bid on this! Possibly the world's most optimistic repairman, an aforementioned wrestler-type, or some sort of fantastic combination of the two.

Photobucket
(remarkable focus on this snap)
WHAT IT IS: 'broken wind-up skeleton dinosaur'

DETAIL OF AUCTION: "old and dusty - the little wires? that hold legs on are gone. To be taken as is.

Please ask quesstions - no refunds
Buyer to pay within 7days thanks"

PRICE: Start your bids at $8.50 , By Now for $12. Where do they get these prices?

Photobucket
(remember these?)
WHAT IT IS: 'Broken Fax' (This seller favours the short and to the point approach, almost to the point of curtness.)

DETAIL OF AUCTION: "can be used for parts"

(That's it. Can be used for parts? As though that's something people are looking for... 'hmm, really need some fax parts....i'll just pop on TradeMe....')

PRICE: $1. This is one auction you'd hope to be a day late and a dollar short.

Photobucket
(This one might be my favourite of the lot)
WHAT IT IS: 'Broken Landmaster Mower'

DETAIL OF AUCTION: "Landmaster Mower brought new in Jan/Feb 2009 from sole NZ distributor in Richmond, Nelson. Only had 5.5 Hrs use since new but broken more than 12 times. Cost $2995 plus GST but want what it has cost me to own and fix hence price. Have since found out that this type of mower has a history with multiple failures. Current condition has multiple cracks and a wheel carrier broken as per photo, also mower currently disassembled. Please note welds have no penitration and expect more failure with use. I offer no warranty with this mower. Any questions please ask. Photo quality poor but camera is broken at moment. If more photos required please ask. Price includes GST and receipt given to winning bidder"

(Just wow. WOW.)

PRICE: $5,635. Five thousand, six hundred and thirty five dollars. Bearing in mind it cost $2995 when new, and now it is anything but new.

The last one.... well, I just took the actual image of the auction, otherwise you may have not believed me.

I have marked the points of note.

"Vintage" vs "Refuse"

Photobucket

Let's see if you can work out if this belongs in

a) a rubbish bin

or

b) your home

When I tell you this is FOR SALE.

I'm back! With hats (and a bin to put them in)

Apologies for the infrequency of posts lately, I have been traveling "abroad" as those in British comedies of the 50's say (and that's something you're all intimately familiar with).

Upon my return from the United States I had to move house. Tedious. Back breaking. Ad infinitum.

However, it did present my the chance to offer my very own smooch, courtesy of some old boxes I went through whilst moving. Here then, are some hats. I did not realise I owned quite so many hats, especially in the "near refuse" condition I unearthed and subsequently captured them in:
